Cheddar Gorge & Caves

DJW has recently completed a unique installation within Cox’s Cave, located at Cheddar Gorge in Somerset.

Overview

Having worked globally in diverse landscapes, varying temperatures, and humid environments, we were aware of the challenges we would face. Everyone on the team worked tirelessly to achieve the beautiful outcome that visitors experience every day.

Visitors are guided through the cave system by an animated guide named Yeo, whose name derives from the local river system. "Yeo’s Journey" is a unique visitor experience celebrating one of Britain’s natural wonders. Yeo takes you on a twenty-minute tour of the caves, from when the cave floor was a seabed, showcasing the power of water and the formation of the caves.

The experience allows people to make many discoveries, from the home of the rainbow — structures created by water trickling through the limestone — to a mirror pool where perfectly clear waters reflect the flowstone formations above it. This attraction utilizes the natural beauty of Cox’s Cave.

One of DJW’s main criteria was to be as accommodating to the environment as possible. We aimed to reuse as many existing cable runs and fixings as we could, and we removed much of the previous equipment to make our installation as unobtrusive as possible. Projectors and audio equipment that needed to be inside the caves were all stored within environmental housings to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance.

Our media partner, Revenant, used 3D scanning technology to ensure the content mapped accurately to the uneven surfaces of the cave formations. We are all extremely proud of the overall outcome of the project.
